Market Heatmap. In this guide: how to read the map, filter and zoom, change the view, and use the summary and the research page.

The Market Heatmap puts a whole index on one screen. Here, the S&P 500. Each tile is one stock, grouped by sector, and the bigger the tile, the bigger its market cap.

Colour shows the one-day price change. Green tiles rose and red tiles fell, and a deeper colour means a bigger move. The legend above the map shows the scale. Prices are end of day, updated nightly.

Hover over a tile for its details: the company, its sector and industry, the price, the day's change, and the market cap.

Click a range in the legend, and every tile outside that band dims. Click it again to clear the filter.

Click a sector's label to zoom into that sector. The legend then names the sector. Click that tag to go back to the full map.

The Universe menu switches the group of companies on the map. Here it moves from the S&P 500 to the Nasdaq-100.

The Color menu changes what the colours measure, from one day up to one year. Here, the past month, and the legend rescales to match.

Size can follow the day's trading volume instead of market cap. And Save PNG downloads the map as an image.

Below the map, a short summary is worked out from the same data: how many stocks rose, the change weighted by market cap, and the strongest and weakest sectors. It describes the map. It is not a forecast.

Click any tile, and

that company's research page opens. Guide three covers it in detail.
